For those who like scary stories, we want to share a special, and very rare, treat.
It is this link to an audio recording of Shirley Jackson reading one of her most famous short stories, “The Lottery.”
According to Ruth Franklin, author of the biography entitled Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life, this is “the only recording of her voice that still exists.” Since Shirley Jackson’s reading brings a new level of tension to the story, it is a true treat to hear how she interprets her own words.
* Wordplay Wisdom strongly believes that parents and their children are the best decision makers about what children should read. Since “The Lottery” is:
(1) a story often studied in high school,
(2) a spooky story, and
(3) a story made even spookier through Shirley Jackson’s reading,
parents and children should discuss and decide whether to access this content.
